  • FREE WORKSHOP: Introduction to Sound in DIY Spaces with Local 107.3fm, Monopolized Records, and Quality Block Party

    Local 107.3fm & Quality Block Party are thrilled to co-present an “Introduction to Sound in DIY Spaces” workshop on Thursday, March 17th from 5-9pm at the Saint John Tool Library, located at 100 Princess Street in Saint John, NB.

    This workshop will be facilitated by Corey Bonnevie of Monopolized Records and is specifically designed to act as an entry level learning opportunity for artists, music enthusiasts, and community members interested in gaining the skills and knowledge required to comfortably tend to all sound-related needs in DIY spaces.

    All participants will put their new skills to good use during part 02 of this workshop, an all-ages show at the Saint John Tool Library on Saturday, March 26th. We will announce the lineup and all other pertinent details for the show within the next few days!

    We’re so excited for unique & inspiring DIY spaces to return to all corners of the City of Saint John this spring and summer as we collectively enter a new chapter.

    The workshop is being offered at no cost to participants and the all-ages show will be free to attend. This project is funded by the Saint John Community Arts Board in the context of Winter Fest.

    Register for the workshop now! We will accept a maximum of 10 participants (ages 16+) in an effort to provide a positive and tactile experience for all. We will provide snacks & non-alcoholic beverages for workshop participants on the 17th. That said, please eat supper beforehand! We’ll also have some treats on-site for show attendees on the 26th! Please note: the all-ages show is a DRY event.

    FINAL DETAILS FOR WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS: you must be available on Thursday, March 17th from 5-9pm and again on Saturday, March 26th from 6-10pm to participate. All necessary gear will be provided by Monopolized Records. Please bring a notebook to the workshop. Masks required upon entry.

  • Local FM is HIRING a Radio Camp Coordinator!

    We are hiring a “Radio Camp Coordinator” to execute Local 107.3fm’s fourth Radio Camp for Youth this summer. This position is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs program, which exclusively hires youth between the ages of 15-30. Applicants must either be Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents. 

    Our camp is offered at no cost to participants and is hosted in partnership with local arts & culture organizations in the City of Saint John. Radio Camp aims to foster a greater understanding of the vital role independent media and the arts play in our community and to provide youth with basic broadcasting skills.

    The successful applicant will be responsible for scheduling and executing the camp in a safe and encouraging manner for all participants.

    Responsibilities (please note that tasks will include, but not be limited to the following):

    • Developing and coordinating a week-long Radio Camp schedule (including workshops, presentations, field trips, etc.)
    • Developing and maintaining partnerships with local arts & culture organizations
    • Coordinating and caring for multiple camp participants
    • Promoting the camp on Local FM’s website and social media channels
    • Executing the Radio Camp registration process
    • Developing ideas & guidebooks for radio workshops with youth
    • Producing Station IDs, promos, and PSAs on Adobe Audition

    Requirements:

    • Basic knowledge of WordPress and Adobe Audition
    • Strong oral and written communication skills
    • Time management and organizational skills
    • Patience and attention to detail
    • A somewhat self-directed approach towards work (Local FM staff will, however, consistently provide guidance and support)
    • Previous experience working with youth

    Details: 8-week contract; 35 hours/week @ $12.00/hour

    Anticipated Start Date: Monday, July 5th, 2021

    Application Deadline: Wednesday, June 23rd, 2021 at 5pm

    The Imperial Theatre is taking all necessary precautions to allow for adequate physical distancing between ticket holders during events. The theatre’s “bubble seating” arrangement allows attendees to reserve tickets with members of their Steady 15. Please specify your bubble seating needs while securing your tickets! Individual tickets are also available. All attendees must wear masks at all times.

    There will be a Show Buddy presence at this event! Show Buddies are sober volunteers trained in bystander empathy practices. They can provide assistance by: watching your drink, securing a cab, or approaching security on your behalf (among other things). Our Show Buddies can be identified in the audience and in all common areas throughout the venue by their labeled neon t-shirts.

  • Local 107.3fm [CFMH-FM] Celebrates 20 YEARS on the FM Dial!

    Local FM listeners, contributors, and supporters:

    Today, we celebrate our 20th anniversary as a CRTC-licensed non-profit radio station on the FM dial! We are hosting a special broadcast from 4-6pm to mark the occasion. Tune in to hear music by local artists Dumpster Cub, Doctor Mother Father, Sadie, Adam Mowery, Jamie Comeau & the Crooked Teeth, and more! We’ll also be chatting with Local FM programmers and former staff members about their experiences in the campus & community radio sector.

    It is impossible to adequately enumerate and thank all of the individuals who have contributed to our station’s growth over the years, but we are immensely grateful to all of our former staff members, past and current programmers and board members, community partners, and listeners for their continued dedication to and investment in Local FM’s success. Thank you for fostering and sustaining our presence in Saint John’s arts & culture community.

    We’re launching the self-nomination form for our 2019-2020 Best of Saint John Music Awards TODAY! Welcome to the “FROM THE HEAT OF SUMMER TO THE DEAD OF WINTER” edition of one of Local FM’s most cherished signature events!

    BOSJ acts as an opportunity to promote our local music scene and to celebrate artistic achievements by Saint John-based creators.

  • Local 107.3fm’s 2019 FunDrive: Celebrating our Local Music Scene, Promoting Community Radio, and Spotlighting the Importance of Compensating Artists for their Creative Work

    CALLING ALL SAINT JOHN ARTISTS, BANDS, AND COMMUNITY RADIO ENTHUSIASTS!

    As detailed in our previous newsletter, Local FM’s operating budget has decreased substantially this year. As a result of this, ensuring the success of our 2019 FunDrive is especially important. For this reason, we’ve chosen to revisit the format and execution of our various fundraising endeavours. We’re happy to announce we’ll be hosting a FunDrive launch show on Saturday, November 2nd at Taco Pica at 10pm. We’ll also be co-presenting a FunDrive finale show with Monopolized Records on Friday, November 8th at Callie’s Pub at 10pm. We can’t yet share the lineups in full, but we can promise you this: the first show will be a DANCE PARTY and the second will be an opportunity to hear some tunes by beloved Saint John bands, both old and new. The nostalgic energy will be VERY REAL, my dear friends.

    The on-air pledge drive component of this year’s FunDrive will unfold from Monday, November 4th to Thursday, November 7th from 7am-midnight each day. Our pledge incentives will include COMPENSATE ARTISTS FAIRLY shirts, Local FM mugs, Local FM fanny packs, copies of the second issue of our zine (Distortion), and VERY limited quantities of shirts featuring lyrics by Saint John bands. As always, our programmers will offer special programming, and we’re even hoping to organize a live session or two to spotlight underrepresented genres of music in our shared city!

    This year, we want to ensure our FunDrive efforts act as an opportunity for our station to simultaneously celebrate our local music scene AND everything our campus & community partners work so hard to offer to the good people of Saint John (from theatre festivals to literary events to safer spaces initiatives).

    If all goes well, this year’s FunDrive earnings will allow us to host our fourth annual FREE Radio Camp for Youth on the UNBSJ campus in August of 2020, launch our live-on-location broadcast booth at local events & festivals (and possibly on Partridge Island, but I digress), host the 12th annual Best of Saint John Music Awards, and develop a system to consistently utilize the Local FM website as a hub to promote upcoming shows at various venues throughout the City of Saint John.

    Guess what?! Local 107.3fm is now accepting submissions for the upcoming SECOND ISSUE of our zine “Distortion” – due out this August!

    Written work of all sorts (stories, poems, interviews, record reviews, etc) as well as visual art (drawings, photography) are currently being collected and curated to be included! We are also open to individuals who are interested in helping out behind the scenes with the zine as well (assembly, editing, distribution, etc) !

    Local FM is excited to announce the release of the debut Live From Local FM compilation! The album features nine artists from Guelph, Mississauga, Fredericton and right here in Saint John.

    Local FM’s Live From Local FM project is designed to provide independent and emerging artists with the opportunity to perform live, and develop recordings at no cost. Funds gained through the EP will be reinvested in expanding on those opportunities for locally based artists! Support artists in your community today!
