  • Local FM is HIRING a Special Projects Coordinator!

    Local FM is HIRING!

Due to the flexible nature of this year’s Canada Summer Jobs program, and due to our inability to host our annual Radio Camp for Youth as a result of restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re thrilled to announce that we are now seeking a candidate to fulfill an entirely new position at our radio station!

We are hiring a “Special Projects Coordinator” to tackle a wide array of exciting initiatives & ongoing creative endeavours at Local FM. As noted, this position is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs program, which exclusively hires youth between the ages of 15-30. Applicants must either be Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents. If you’ve already held a CSJ position in 2020, you are still eligible to apply, just as long as your previous contract has ended.

Responsibilities (please note that tasks will include, but not be limited to the following):

    • Developing ideas & guidebooks for future radio workshops with youth.
    • Assisting in the planning & execution of a virtual iteration of Local FM’s annual celebration of our music scene, the Best of Saint John Music Awards.
    • Assisting in the planning & execution of our first-ever DIY Sound Tech Workshop for Women & Non-Binary Individuals in the City of Saint John.
    • Making improvements & alterations to Local FM’s website.
    • Producing Station IDs, promos, and PSAs on Adobe Audition to benefit our campus & community partners.
    • Injecting fresh content into Local FM’s various social media channels (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter).
    • Maintaining Local FM’s physical & digital Music Libraries.

    Requirements:

    • Basic knowledge of WordPress and Adobe Audition.
    • Strong oral and written communication skills.
    • Time management and organizational skills.
    • A somewhat self-directed approach towards work (Local FM staff will, however, consistently provide guidance and support).
    • Previous event management & curriculum development experience preferred, but not necessary.

    Details (two options available):

    8-week contract: 35 hours/week @ $12.00/hour

    14-week contract: 20 hours/week @ 12.00/hour

    Anticipated Start Date: TBD

Application Deadline: Friday, October 30th, 2020 at 5pm

Please email resumes & cover letters to: julia@cfmh.ca

This position is supervised by Local FM’s Station Manager & Program Director, Julia Eleanor Rogers, and includes training, mentorship, and frequent opportunities for feedback and evaluation.

We thank all applicants for applying, but only selected individuals will be contacted for interviews.

  • Local 107.3fm’s 2019 FunDrive: Celebrating our Local Music Scene, Promoting Community Radio, and Spotlighting the Importance of Compensating Artists for their Creative Work

CALLING ALL SAINT JOHN ARTISTS, BANDS, AND COMMUNITY RADIO ENTHUSIASTS!

As detailed in our previous newsletter, Local FM’s operating budget has decreased substantially this year. As a result of this, ensuring the success of our 2019 FunDrive is especially important. For this reason, we’ve chosen to revisit the format and execution of our various fundraising endeavours. We’re happy to announce we’ll be hosting a FunDrive launch show on Saturday, November 2nd at Taco Pica at 10pm. We’ll also be co-presenting a FunDrive finale show with Monopolized Records on Friday, November 8th at Callie’s Pub at 10pm. We can’t yet share the lineups in full, but we can promise you this: the first show will be a DANCE PARTY and the second will be an opportunity to hear some tunes by beloved Saint John bands, both old and new. The nostalgic energy will be VERY REAL, my dear friends.

The on-air pledge drive component of this year’s FunDrive will unfold from Monday, November 4th to Thursday, November 7th from 7am-midnight each day. Our pledge incentives will include COMPENSATE ARTISTS FAIRLY shirts, Local FM mugs, Local FM fanny packs, copies of the second issue of our zine (Distortion), and VERY limited quantities of shirts featuring lyrics by Saint John bands. As always, our programmers will offer special programming, and we’re even hoping to organize a live session or two to spotlight underrepresented genres of music in our shared city!

This year, we want to ensure our FunDrive efforts act as an opportunity for our station to simultaneously celebrate our local music scene AND everything our campus & community partners work so hard to offer to the good people of Saint John (from theatre festivals to literary events to safer spaces initiatives).

If all goes well, this year’s FunDrive earnings will allow us to host our fourth annual FREE Radio Camp for Youth on the UNBSJ campus in August of 2020, launch our live-on-location broadcast booth at local events & festivals (and possibly on Partridge Island, but I digress), host the 12th annual Best of Saint John Music Awards, and develop a system to consistently utilize the Local FM website as a hub to promote upcoming shows at various venues throughout the City of Saint John.

Please stay tuned for more information about our two shows, on-air FunDrive programming, and pledge incentives over the next few weeks!

***If you’re in a Saint John band and would like to have some of your lyrics printed on a VERY limited run of shirts to support our 2019 fundraising efforts, please email me directly: julia@cfmh.ca

    Kindly,

Julia Eleanor Rogers (Local FM Station Manager & Program Director)

  • Entering A New Era At Local 107.3fm

Local FM Members, Partners, and Listeners:

On August 26th, Local FM will officially enter a new chapter. To be frank, our operating budget has dwindled substantially for this next academic year, which has required our board to carefully consider how to ensure consistency and order within the organization moving forward. We’re confident we’ve restructured Local FM’s approach to staffing and operations in a manner that will allow us to continue to serve both the UNB Saint John campus and the City of Saint John with purpose and intent.

Moving forward, I’ll inhabit the roles of Station Manager and Program Director simultaneously. After I’ve settled into this hybrid role, we’ll hire a part-time staff person to step into the role of administrative assistant for approximately 15 hours/week.

Although this approach varies substantially from what you’re all accustomed to, I can assure you I’m wholly dedicated to ensuring you continue to feel adequately supported and championed as volunteer programmers and external partners.

Although I’ll need to scale back on certain special projects (including our collectives, live sessions, and zines) while captaining the ship into uncharted waters, I will work diligently to retain all existing campus-based partnerships. In that same vein, I hope to strengthen and deepen our established relationships with local arts & culture organizations during this time period.

Simply put, the organization will prioritize producing radio programs that reflect the needs, interests, and passions of our listeners. I’ll continue to act as a cheerleader for UNBSJ students and community members who yearn to speak of their passions and niche areas of interests on-air. I’ll promote local artists and bands, homegrown festivals, community events, and UNBSJ initiatives and athletics.

Please know this is not a time of crisis. It is an opportunity to prioritize our membership’s needs, to sustain the outside partnerships we’re immensely proud of, and to focus on making good radio that reflects the diversity of our shared city. We’ll continue to highlight music, literature, and theatre made by those who spend their days creating art in this foggy city’s brick-laden streets.

We’ll make space for underrepresented communities, speak proudly of what we believe in, celebrate what makes Saint John beautiful, and critically examine what others can’t (because we can, and therefore we must).

I view our station’s 250 watt range on the FM dial as an avenue for individuals to express the inner workings of their hearts & minds on-air. Local FM’s magic stems from its ability to be unencumbered by a need to satisfy the masses. Instead, we aim to foster a safe(r) space for those who exist in this world in ways that sometimes defy conventional norms. I’m tremendously grateful for this opportunity to continue to exist within this realm with all of you.

Thank you for your continued dedication to Local FM. I hope you’re just as excited as I am for what’s to come!

As of August 26th, please redirect all Local FM inquiries (unrelated to Board matters and the Music Department) to julia@cfmh.ca.

    Kindly,

Julia Eleanor Rogers, Local FM Station Manager & Program Director (as of August 26th, 2019)

“All will be well and all will be well and all manner of things will be well.”
