  • Fun[D]rive 2018 – DAY 1!

    The first full day of our 2018 Fun[D]rive has come and gone. Thanks to the support of Saint John, we’ve already reached 50% of our goal!

    We’re sitting at $1687.89. Make your donations online at localfm.ca/donate, e-transfers to info@cfmh.ca, phoning in a pledge at 506 648 5925 or visiting our offices on the UNBSJ campus! Help get us closer to our goal of $3000.00!

    Local FM is grateful for all the support, donations, and excitement expressed by our surrounding community, and friends. Thanks to this support, Local FM will be able to improve on several of our community focused projects.

    Thanks to these donations, Local FM is excited to guarantee that we will be able to offer and operate our annual Radio Camp! A free summer camp for youth in Saint John aged 8-14 for a third consecutive year in the summer of 2019! Radio Camp! is offered in partnership with the Fundy Fringe Festival, and aims to foster a live-long love and appreciation of independent and emerging Canadian art in Saint John youth. Radio Camp! educates youth about the importance of independent media, and provides them with the tools and opportunities to create media to share their stories and their interests.

    Please continue to support Local FM, donations gathered through FunDrive will go towards supporting a variety of projects in addition to Radio Camp! These projects include advocacy support for FemCore, Local FM’s feminist collective, additional resources for our spoken word collective as they bring both journalism and creative spoken word (such as radio plays and slam poetry evenings) to the fore.

    Funds will also go to support Distortion, an independent magazine produced by Local FM members and featuring content from all members of the Saint John community, and finally to our Live From Local FM project, which provides up and coming new artists with the opportunity to record demos, and singles, practice their performances, and build their audiences, at no cost to the artists.

  • RELEASED: Live From Local FM #1

    Local FM is excited to announce the release of the debut Live From Local FM compilation! The album features nine artists from Guelph, Mississauga, Fredericton and right here in Saint John.

    Local FM’s Live From Local FM project is designed to provide independent and emerging artists with the opportunity to perform live, and develop recordings at no cost. Funds gained through the EP will be reinvested in expanding on those opportunities for locally based artists! Support artists in your community today!

     

  • FUNDING OFFERED TO LOCAL FM

    The Community Radio Fund of Canada proudly supports “Introducing, Increasing, and Improving Spoken Word Programming for/by Saint John”

     

    Saint John and Ottawa (August 27th, 2018) – Roger Ouellette, President of the Community Radio Fund of Canada (CRFC) and Glen Swarnadhipathi, Station Manager of Local FM (CFMH-FM), a campus radio station based in Saint John, NB, are pleased to announce that $47,000 will go towards the implementation of “Introducing, Increasing, and Improving Spoken Word Programming for/by Saint John“. These funds were made available by the CRFC under their Radiometres program, a funding program aimed to improve local programming and volunteer participation. This is the 6th time that the CRFC provides financial support to CFMH-FM under this program, bringing the total awarded to $217,000.

     

    With the funds received, the station aims to increase the amount of locally reflective spok

    en word programming produced by CFMH by offering volunteers greater support, training, and encouragement in the development and production of locally focused, sustainable, and creative programming unique to Saint John.

     

    “Thanks to the support of the CRFC, Local FM has grown into a vital part of the social fabric of Saint John. Our membership, and community partners, are dedicated and passionate; with this latest Radiometres project, we’re excited to provide them with stronger tools, resources, and support systems as they continue to create diverse, creative, and locally reflective programming and initiatives,” says Local FM station manager, Glen Swarnadhipathi.

     

    Since its inception in 2012, the Radiometres program enabled a total investment of more than $12 million in the campus and community radio sector. It is an im

    pressive number of 360 funded projects that have been approved. “I’m happy to add this project to the growing list of funded initiatives. I have no doubt as to the positive impact that this new, innovative, and truly local programming will have on the station and its listeners,” says the CRFC President, Roger Ouellette.

  • Radio Camp 2018 Registration OPEN

    Local FM is excited to announce the second year of their youth radio camp. The camp is offered at no cost to participants.

    The camp is once again partnering with the Fundy Fringe Festival to conduct artist interviews to help hone skills in that area. Sarah Rankin, the director of Fringe Festival, had this to say:

    “The Fundy Fringe is thrilled and honoured to once again partner with Local 107.3 on their annual radio camp. It’s a joy to see the youth interact with performers from around the world, listening to and sharing their stories with each other.” 

    The camp will run for one week, starting Monday, August 20th until August 24th. Programming will run from 8:45 AM to 5 PM. The camp will also feature opportunities to connect with the following local organizations and more:

    • Huddle
    • Saint John Free Public Library
    • Saint John Arts Centre

    Student Job Posting: Radio Camp Coordinator

    Thanks to the support of the Canada Summer Jobs program Local FM is looking for a student to fill the role of Radio Camp Coordinator!

    Radio Camp is a no-cost summer camp for youth in Saint John, hosted by Local FM in partnership with local arts & cultural groups. Now in it’s second year, Radio Camp aims to provide youth with the information and understanding of the vital role independent media and the arts play in our community.

    The Radio Camp Coordinator will be responsible for ensuring that the camp runs smoothly, safely, and provides support and encouragement for youth.

    Responsibilities (please note that tasks will include, but not be limited to the following):

    • Developing a week-long radio camp schedule (including workshops, presentations, activities, etc).
    • Coordinating activities involving several individuals and partner organizations.
    • Coordinating and caring for multiple camp participants.
    • Promoting Radio Camp, and developing partnerships with local nonprofits, artistic, and cultural organizations.


    Requirements:

    • Patience and attention to detail.
    • Strong oral and written communication skills.
    • Time management and organizational skills.
    • An independently minded approach towards work.
    • Previous experience coordinating or working with youth an asset.


    Details

    • 8 Weeks contract
    • 35 Hours/Week @$12.00/hour
    • Anticipated start date: Monday, July 9th, 2018
    • Application Deadline: Friday, June 29th.

  • Local FM to air marathon produced by UNB-Saint John students

    Local FM is excited to announce a marathon celebrating the contributions of nonprofits and community organizations to Saint John’s social fabric.

    The marathon was produced by UNB-SJ students as part of a business administration course. Dr. Constance Van Horne, their instructor, describes the project as being:

    “The best way to learn about Business Communications is to use it. My students needed to use all aspects of communications in this project and they also had to craft appropriate narratives for these organizations that don’t get enough attention for the great work they do. I could not be prouder of the students – contacting organizations, arranging interviews, developing a storyline in collaboration with their organization and getting it all put together in a final documentary. Most importantly, they found their voices through helping others find their own – that is the beauty of community radio and the beauty of learning by doing.”

    The marathon will run twice, on Saturday, May 5th from 1 PM to 6 PM, and again on Sunday, May 6th from 8 AM to 1 PM. The marathon will feature the following local organizations:

    Local FM hosts first ever Anti-Oppression Panel

    Local-FM held its first Anti-Oppression session on Sunday, March 18th, in the form of a community panel! We had (pictured left to right) :


    Sheri McAulay from PRUDE Inc., Jeff Sparks from Muscular Dystrophy Canada, Abigail Smith of FemCore at Local 107.3fm, Tish LeSage from P.U.L.S.E. Inc. and Stephanie Tierney from Local 107.3fm.

    We had thoughtful conversations, heard interesting perspectives from underrepresented communities within our city of Saint John and shared ways on healing and creating more inclusion in our workplaces, community groups and personal lives. A great session!

    Local FM looks forward to hosting another community focused panel in 2019, featuring Saint John residents tackling the issues facing Saint John.

    EGM Notification + Pizza Party!

    Local-FM is hosting a pizza party to thank it’s volunteers for their continued dedication and contributions to our community. All volunteers are welcomed and invited to join us at the Whitebone Lounge on Sunday, February 11th at 12:30 PM.

    We’ll also be holding a short vote on bylaw reform. We’ve been creating an updated version of our constitution that better reflects how we operate. Feel free to take a look at the two constitutions, current and reformed, as well as the report from the bylaw review committee who developed the new constitution in response to certain issues with the current set.
