    15th Annual Homelessness Marathon

    On Wednesday February 22nd, 2017, Local 107.3 FM in Saint John, NB will host the 2017 Homelessness Marathon.  Having aired the annual overnight radio marathon for a number of years, we are proud to take the opportunity to organize this year’s broadcast.

    This year marks the 15th annual Homelessness Marathon, a yearly overnight radio broadcast shared on campus and community stations from coast to coast, creating linkages and raising awareness of homelessness in Canadian communities.

    The Marathon began in 1998 in Geneva, New York and the 19th annual Homelessness Marathon was held in January at WMPG in Portland, Maine. The concept moved north to Canada 15 years ago with CKUT-FM in Montreal as the host station who took the reins for 11 years. The marathon has begun rotating hosts across Canada in recent years including Edmonton, Kingston, and Abbotsford.

    The 2017 marathon will air on 17 broadcasters representing 6 provinces and will feature local and national programming including 30-minute to two-hour segments. Topics will include the displacement of homeless populations, organisations and community members who provide resources, and in depth portraits of individuals who have experienced homelessness.

    This year’s broadcast will last 11 hours, starting on Wednesday February 22nd, 2017 at 7 PM (AST) and running until Thursday, February 23rd at 6 AM (AST). Regular Local-FM programming will be pre-empted for the entirety of the broadcast, airing instead public forums, pre-recorded stories, and other content from community broadcasters.

    Funding drive is an exhausting week in the most positive sense of the word. Months of planning from staff is put into action by our tireless volunteers who give it their all and hope you respond. Well, Saint John; respond you did! You made those phones ring and threw your love online to give us our best funding drive result ever.

    We expect to announce a final, official tally at the end of November as we collect donation bins and last minute pledges, but our preliminary total is amazing:

    That’s nearly double what you helped us raise in 2015!

  • Welcome Sadie Donahue To Our Team This Summer!

    Local 107.3FM is happy to announce the inclusion of summer intern Sadie Donahue to our team for the next eight weeks as our Marketing/Fundraising Assistant. A local artist in her own right who is working towards obtaining a Bachelor of Music degree at Mount Allison University, Sadie joins us with experience from CHMA 106.9 FM in Sackville where, in addition to producing radio, she has been involved in organization, promotion, sponsorship, networking, and more.

    Sadie writes: “Becoming so involved with the station gave me the chance to meet people I may have otherwise not met, introduced me to music that I now love, and has taught me not only the importance of reaching out to a community, but how to reach a community. Radio is important to me because it gives a community a mutual interest, a mutual goal, and a sense of a collective purpose for your area. It can also be a way for an individual to express themselves to a community, whether it is through their discussions/music on their show or what an individual chooses to vote for within a certain poll.”

  • CFMH Celebrates 15 Years On The FM Dial

    While the history of campus-based community radio in Saint John (as spottily collected as it is) dates back to 1972, the momentous occasion of CFMH’s debut as a CRTC-licensed non-profit radio station on the FM dial occurred on January 12, 2001 at its ever-present home of UNB Saint John. Pre-existing this event and over the 15 years since, countless staff and volunteer hours from numerous members have gone into creating a strong arts & culture presence over the airwaves in our fine port city.

    To help celebrate and mark this milestone, in addition to great programming and events, we have commissioned and will be sharing pieces from local artists throughout the year. As found above, we kickoff with the first of a couple pieces from Stephanie Tierney, an on-again, off-again volunteer and staff member since 2003.

    Encompassing everyone who has contributed to the strength of community radio in Saint John over the years, from staff, volunteers, listeners, and donors alike, would be a triumphant quest in and of itself. So, we simply offer a hearty THANK YOU and cheers to another 15 years.
