Local FM listeners, contributors, and supporters:

Today, we celebrate our 20th anniversary as a CRTC-licensed non-profit radio station on the FM dial! We are hosting a special broadcast from 4-6pm to mark the occasion. Tune in to hear music by local artists Dumpster Cub, Doctor Mother Father, Sadie, Adam Mowery, Jamie Comeau & the Crooked Teeth, and more! We’ll also be chatting with Local FM programmers and former staff members about their experiences in the campus & community radio sector.

It is impossible to adequately enumerate and thank all of the individuals who have contributed to our station’s growth over the years, but we are immensely grateful to all of our former staff members, past and current programmers and board members, community partners, and listeners for their continued dedication to and investment in Local FM’s success. Thank you for fostering and sustaining our presence in Saint John’s arts & culture community.

In other news, the self-nomination form for this year’s Best of Saint John Music Awards is now available on our website. Additionally, our current programming schedule can be found here.

We look forward to broadcasting live from our beloved home on the second floor of the Thomas J. Condon Student Centre on the UNB Saint John campus this afternoon! If you’d like to contribute to today’s broadcast, you can reach our live booth by dialing: (506) 648 5925.

  • “We Are Children Of The Stars”: Saluting Local FM Programmer & Spoken Word Collective Member David Carr

Local FM Programmer David Carr exited this realm on Tuesday, November 5th, 2019. I feel tremendously grateful to have known him and to have aired many of his beautiful poems on 107.3fm in 2018 & 2019.

I originally met David through Local FM programmer Chris Wanamaker, one of our Spoken Word Collective’s first and most enthusiastic members. David & Chris collaborated on a limited series titled, “The David Carr Show” wherein David read his poetry aloud and Chris spearheaded conversations about the various themes and messages held within David’s body of work.

Additionally, David & Chris collaborated on a Christmas special with Spearos Lahanas for our annual “Christmas Eve Extravaganza” on December 24th, 2018. David also participated in our Community Poetry Slam in 2019.

Most notably, David contributed three pieces to our Spoken Word Collective’s project, “Experiences: A Local 107.3fm Soundscape Collection” [produced by Shawn Goff].

In the coming weeks, we’ll curate a memorial program in David’s honour. In the interim, please listen to the three soundscapes linked below. These recordings will be remembered as David’s final and most awe-inspiring contributions to Local FM.

    David Carr: Dangerous Greed

    David Carr: No More Minutes

    David Carr: Starchildren

    Sincerely,

Julia Eleanor Rogers, Local FM Station Manager & Program Director

“We are children of the universe. Know this: be proud, not prideful, for by oneself, we are nothing. As part of the whole, we are everything. We are nothing and, yet, we are everything. Look up at the stars, my children. You are looking at your home. For more than our petty minds, we are children of the stars, made from the same matter, returning again when we are done. We are all, every species, every creature that ever was, or will be: we are the starchildren.” – David Carr, 2019

  • Local 107.3fm’s 2019 FunDrive: Celebrating our Local Music Scene, Promoting Community Radio, and Spotlighting the Importance of Compensating Artists for their Creative Work

CALLING ALL SAINT JOHN ARTISTS, BANDS, AND COMMUNITY RADIO ENTHUSIASTS!

As detailed in our previous newsletter, Local FM’s operating budget has decreased substantially this year. As a result of this, ensuring the success of our 2019 FunDrive is especially important. For this reason, we’ve chosen to revisit the format and execution of our various fundraising endeavours. We’re happy to announce we’ll be hosting a FunDrive launch show on Saturday, November 2nd at Taco Pica at 10pm. We’ll also be co-presenting a FunDrive finale show with Monopolized Records on Friday, November 8th at Callie’s Pub at 10pm. We can’t yet share the lineups in full, but we can promise you this: the first show will be a DANCE PARTY and the second will be an opportunity to hear some tunes by beloved Saint John bands, both old and new. The nostalgic energy will be VERY REAL, my dear friends.

The on-air pledge drive component of this year’s FunDrive will unfold from Monday, November 4th to Thursday, November 7th from 7am-midnight each day. Our pledge incentives will include COMPENSATE ARTISTS FAIRLY shirts, Local FM mugs, Local FM fanny packs, copies of the second issue of our zine (Distortion), and VERY limited quantities of shirts featuring lyrics by Saint John bands. As always, our programmers will offer special programming, and we’re even hoping to organize a live session or two to spotlight underrepresented genres of music in our shared city!

This year, we want to ensure our FunDrive efforts act as an opportunity for our station to simultaneously celebrate our local music scene AND everything our campus & community partners work so hard to offer to the good people of Saint John (from theatre festivals to literary events to safer spaces initiatives).

If all goes well, this year’s FunDrive earnings will allow us to host our fourth annual FREE Radio Camp for Youth on the UNBSJ campus in August of 2020, launch our live-on-location broadcast booth at local events & festivals (and possibly on Partridge Island, but I digress), host the 12th annual Best of Saint John Music Awards, and develop a system to consistently utilize the Local FM website as a hub to promote upcoming shows at various venues throughout the City of Saint John.

Please stay tuned for more information about our two shows, on-air FunDrive programming, and pledge incentives over the next few weeks!

***If you’re in a Saint John band and would like to have some of your lyrics printed on a VERY limited run of shirts to support our 2019 fundraising efforts, please email me directly: julia@cfmh.ca

    Kindly,

Julia Eleanor Rogers (Local FM Station Manager & Program Director)

  • Entering A New Era At Local 107.3fm

Local FM Members, Partners, and Listeners:

On August 26th, Local FM will officially enter a new chapter. To be frank, our operating budget has dwindled substantially for this next academic year, which has required our board to carefully consider how to ensure consistency and order within the organization moving forward. We’re confident we’ve restructured Local FM’s approach to staffing and operations in a manner that will allow us to continue to serve both the UNB Saint John campus and the City of Saint John with purpose and intent.

Moving forward, I’ll inhabit the roles of Station Manager and Program Director simultaneously. After I’ve settled into this hybrid role, we’ll hire a part-time staff person to step into the role of administrative assistant for approximately 15 hours/week.

Although this approach varies substantially from what you’re all accustomed to, I can assure you I’m wholly dedicated to ensuring you continue to feel adequately supported and championed as volunteer programmers and external partners.

Although I’ll need to scale back on certain special projects (including our collectives, live sessions, and zines) while captaining the ship into uncharted waters, I will work diligently to retain all existing campus-based partnerships. In that same vein, I hope to strengthen and deepen our established relationships with local arts & culture organizations during this time period.

Simply put, the organization will prioritize producing radio programs that reflect the needs, interests, and passions of our listeners. I’ll continue to act as a cheerleader for UNBSJ students and community members who yearn to speak of their passions and niche areas of interests on-air. I’ll promote local artists and bands, homegrown festivals, community events, and UNBSJ initiatives and athletics.

Please know this is not a time of crisis. It is an opportunity to prioritize our membership’s needs, to sustain the outside partnerships we’re immensely proud of, and to focus on making good radio that reflects the diversity of our shared city. We’ll continue to highlight music, literature, and theatre made by those who spend their days creating art in this foggy city’s brick-laden streets.

We’ll make space for underrepresented communities, speak proudly of what we believe in, celebrate what makes Saint John beautiful, and critically examine what others can’t (because we can, and therefore we must).

I view our station’s 250 watt range on the FM dial as an avenue for individuals to express the inner workings of their hearts & minds on-air. Local FM’s magic stems from its ability to be unencumbered by a need to satisfy the masses. Instead, we aim to foster a safe(r) space for those who exist in this world in ways that sometimes defy conventional norms. I’m tremendously grateful for this opportunity to continue to exist within this realm with all of you.

Thank you for your continued dedication to Local FM. I hope you’re just as excited as I am for what’s to come!

As of August 26th, please redirect all Local FM inquiries (unrelated to Board matters and the Music Department) to julia@cfmh.ca.

    Kindly,

Julia Eleanor Rogers, Local FM Station Manager & Program Director (as of August 26th, 2019)

“All will be well and all will be well and all manner of things will be well.”

  • Local 107.3fm’s 2019 Canada Day Special

Tune in to Local 107.3fm’s 2019 Canada Day Special from 7am to midnight on July 1st. This year, we’ve chosen to air almost exclusively indigenous content curated from across Turtle Island to recognize the fact that we live on land that remains unsurrendered by the Indigenous Peoples of this area.

Local FM recognizes and respects that it operates on the traditional, unceded territories of the Wolastoqey, Peskotomuhkati, and Mi’gmaq Peoples.

Thank you for listening, and thank you for supporting independent media in the City of Saint John, located at the mouth of the Wolastoq, the beautiful and bountiful river, where Indigenous Peoples lived, travelled, traded, and celebrated for thousands of years.
